Splatoon Raiders was revealed in perhaps the most lowkey way imaginable almost a year ago and has been completely mum since then, but the mysteriously quiet upcoming Switch 2 game might be rearing its head soon. At least, if a new age rating is anything to go by.
As reported on by MyNintendoNews, Nintendo quietly updated Splatoon Raiders’ EU eShop listing with a new age classification of PEGI 7. The storefront listing previously only had a TBD (to be determined) rating as recently as the start of the month, and the rating is fresh enough that Splatoon Raider’s classification hasn’t even been added to the PEGI website yet.
For those unaware, PEGI is essentially the European version of ESRB, a content rating system that slaps game boxes with an age – mostly to help parents figure out what’s appropriate to buy children as a birthday gift and to give adult gamers an idea of how raunchy a new game might be.
A new rating for Splatoon Raiders is particularly notable because games don’t usually get age classifications until they’re somewhat near the finish line. PEGI or the ESRB can’t recommend a game to children, or not, based on concept art and white boxed prototypes, after all.
Still, the fact that Splatoon Raiders doesn’t appear on the classification board’s own website probably means you should lay off on the hopium until we hear from Nintendo itself about its shadowy spin-off.
Splatoon Raiders’ first trailer was heavy on cool vibes and story content, but light on actual, concrete looks at its gameplay. Whether its a crafty-survive ’em up, an extraction painter, or a co-op exploration game is anyone’s guess. But since this is a spin-off, I wouldn’t expect it to be too focused on the main series’ uproarious competitive multiplayer.
