A Final Fantasy 9 remake has long been rumored and even hinted at, but one prominent leaker is claiming that Square Enix’s not-yet-official revival has been shelved for now.
Normally reliable leaker NateTheHate has been a trusted, unofficial source for the Nintendo community for a long while, frequently and accurately spilling the tea on Nintendo Directs and the exact random afternoon that the Switch 2 would be properly unveiled. He’s now dished out on things he’s heard about the best Final Fantasy ever made (I don’t make the rules.)
“The last update I had on it is that the game is still on ice,” the leaker said in a recent NateTheHate podcast episode. “Now, ‘on ice’ with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I’ve heard there’s been no new movement with it. Hopefully, one day, Square Enix returns to it and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light.”
You might recall that we first caught wind of Final Fantasy 9 remake’s possible existence in the prophetic Nvidia leaks from a few years back, the same leak that mentioned Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dragon’s Dogma 2, a Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, a Final Fantasy Tactics revival and many more games well before they were revealed in any official capacity.
Final Fantasy 9’s remake is one of the only projects from the Nvidia leaks that still hasn’t reared its face to the public, if it ever properly existed at all. But with or without a remake, Square Enix is doing plenty to celebrate the absolute classic with a picture book prequel, new merch, and an upcoming animated TV show.
