No one will herald the end of the Madonna biopic, Who’s That Girl. Despite delays and rumored cancellations, Julia Garner set the record straight, confirming that the movie is still happening on the Smartless podcast. “I just remembered, were you supposed to play Madonna at some point? Is that going to still happen?” co-host Sean Hayes asked her. “Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen,” Garner replied before explaining how she prepared to audition to play the material girl. “I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer,” she explained. “I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!” She embodied an important phrase, WWMD (What would Madonna do?), as she described her audition techniques that landed her the part: “Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.’”
Madonna confirmed last summer that they were working on rewrites of the script, but beyond that, there’s been no further news like a release date or timeline for the film. Garner does remind us that good things are worth the wait, concluding on the podcast, “I feel like anything that’s great… takes a long time.”
