BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football has canceled a home-and-home series with Virginia that was scheduled for 2027 and 2028, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The schools agreed to play the home-and-home series back in 2021 at a time when the Big Ten required member schools to play a Power Four non-conference opponent. The Hoosiers have agreed to pay out the $500,000 it owes in damages for canceling the series as stipulated in the contract.
The Sentinel was the first to report that IU scheduled a game against Kennesaw State on Sept. 4, 2027, the same day it was set to play in Charlottesville. The Hoosiers previously added Kennesaw State to its 2025 schedule after cancelling a game against Louisville.
Indiana‘s home-and-home series against Notre Dame scheduled for 2030 (at South Bend) and 2031 (in Bloomington) are the only games it currently has scheduled against a non-conference Power Four opponent through 2032.
The Hoosiers’ non-conference schedule is complete for 2027 — they will also face Indiana State and UMass — but they only have one non-conference game scheduled (Eastern Michigan) for 2028. They are also looking to fill an opening in their 2026 schedule that includes non-conference games against Colorado State and Western Kentucky.
