3 Chargers players who must improve in the third preseason game

The Chargers continue preseason play against the Rams on Saturday. With only two games left before they make their cuts to finalize the 53-man roster, several players must show out to the coaching staff, whether they’re looking to secure a roster spot or work their way up the depth chart at their respective positions.

Let’s look at who needs to step it up in the team’s third preseason game in SoFi Stadium.

EDGE Kyle Kennard

Heading into the summer, it was thought that Kennard, the fourth-round pick, would hold the fourth edge rusher spot behind Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, and Bud Dupree. But it’s been Caleb Murphy who has steadily been creeping his way towards that spot. Murphy’s play on defense and special teams has been superior to what Kennard has shown thus far. The former South Carolina product did not play last weekend against the Saints, so he must flash on Saturday if he wants to earn playing time this upcoming season.

WR Tre Harris

The passing game took a back seat against New Orleans, so it was difficult to evaluate the wide receiver position as a whole. However, this should be a good opportunity for Harris to showcase his abilities, with Justin Herbert set to play a series or two. Harris has dealt with some dropped passes in camp, but I’m more so watching how he separates, something that he has needed to hone in on since entering the league.

CB Ja’Sir Taylor

In the first preseason game, it was Nikko Reed who stood out among the cornerbacks. This past weekend, it was Eric Rogers who took the spotlight. Despite his efforts as a gunner on special teams, Taylor hasn’t particularly put it together on the defensive side of the ball. If he wants to unseat one of these guys fighting hard for a spot on the back end of the depth chart, Taylor must make some plays in the secondary.
