135 Seacoast runners are competing in the Boston Marathon: See all the local participants

There are 135 runners from Seacoast New Hampshire and southern York County, Maine, scheduled to compete in the 129th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21.

From the youngest Seacoast runner, Cooper Miller, 18, of Greenland, to the oldest, Thomas Adler, 74, of Kennebunkport, these runners are part of the more than 30,000 in the 2025 field expected to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Copley Square.

Last year’s fastest Seacoast runner, Matt Homich of Portsmouth, is scheduled to run again. Homich, now 37, finished last year’s race in 2 hours 44 minutes 13 seconds. He placed 731st overall and 699th among men. He competed in the ages 18-39 division and averaged 6:16 per mile.

Exeter’s Dawn Ebbetts, who won the 70-74 women’s age group last year in a time of 3:46.2, will aim to defend her title.

Ebbetts hopes to defend women’s 70-74 division title

Dawn Ebbetts certainly made her first Boston Marathon a memorable one last April by winning the women’s 70-to-74-year-old age group in a time of 3 hours, 46 minutes, 2 seconds.

“I am just going to do the best I can, don’t get too excited and just try to get it done,” said Ebbetts, 71, an Exeter resident for the past 36 years.

Ebbetts bested the 61-woman field last year by 4 minutes, 32 seconds.

“My goal this year is to go out conservatively, so I don’t crash at the end,” said Ebbetts, a member of the Exeter Running Club for the past 10 years. “It would be nice to finish a little faster than last year, but we’ll see what happens.”

Ebbetts has only competed in one race, a 5K, since last year’s Boston Marathon. Ebbetts has been dealing with a “cranky left knee” since a track workout last summer.

“Something pulled somewhere,” she said. “I’ve done some PT, and got a couple cortisone shots; just trying to get it back.”

This will be Ebbetts’ second Boston Marathon and fourth marathon overall. She ran the Bay State Martahon in Lowell, Masschusetts in 2023, and the Clarence DeMar Marathon in Keene in 2023. She has no “bucket” marathon she wants to run, saying she’s already raced the “best.”

“Boston is the most famous,” she said. “Everyone wants to run Boston.”

St. Thomas Aquinas senior is youngest Seacoast runner

Cooper Miller is a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas, and never ran cross country or track and field for the Saints.

However, the 18-year-old from Greenland, will be running in the historic Boston Marathon later this month.

In fact, Miller is the youngest runner of the 135 Seacoast residents who are scheduled to compete.

“That’s incredible, I think it’s a unique opportunity,” Miller said. “It’s a blessing to enter such a prestigious race at such a young age. I am really honored and blessed to have this opportunity to run.”

Miller will be running for The Michael Lisnow Respite Center. The facility, located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, provides emotional and physical support for individuals with disabilities and their families, according to its website.

“A family friend had a daughter who struggled with severe disabilities, and has worked with (Michael Lisnow Respite Center),” Miller said. “That organization has a team of runners each year. I am raising money for that organization, but in honor of family friend who passed away.”

Miller will be running in honor of a family friend, Adelaide Schuster. He said watching the Boston Marathon last year near the finish line with a cousin inspired him to try and run this year.

“(Watching) was unlike anything else, and I got into running last summer, and running (Boston) was a goal I wanted to chase,” Miller said. “I’ve been looking forward to this since early fall.”

Miller hopes to finish the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 45 minutes.

“Mentally, this has been the toughest thing I have ever done in my life, but also the most rewarding,” Miller said. “It’s been very beneficial for me in many facets of my life.”

York resident running for Children’s Hospital

Jeffrey Jellison, of York, Maine, had to take both of his sons to Boston Children’s Hospital when they were young.

“Both my sons needed some help down there, and that, obviously, was scary for a young family not knowing what’s going,” Jellison said. “Our boys were fine, but when you go into that hospital, and you see all the kids who aren’t fine. That really resonated with me and my family. Both my boys needed surgeries there, and we wanted to give back, and say ‘thank you.’”

Jellison first ran the Boston Marathon to raise money for Children’s Hospital in 2009, and has also run in 2010, 2015 and 2021.

Jellison will be running the Boston Marathon for the fifth-and-final time this year, and plans to raise $15,000. In total, Jellison estimates he has raised close to $50,000.

“It’s a great cause,” Jellison said. “I am ever so grateful to give back to them, and happy to do it.”

Jellison, who has a best Boston time of 4:19, hopes to finish this year’s race under 4:30.

“I’ll be happy with anything under that,” he said. “It’s been tough training this time around.”
